Why do media professionals use location-specific sounds in their productions? It’s because every production quite simply requires specific sounds. Like photographs and video, sounds are fundamentally different from location to location. The sounds of local accents, celebrations, transport, cultural and religious ceremonies, local music, birds and general wildlife are just a few examples of what we hear around us every day. We relate these sounds to specific locations – if only subconsciously.
In film and TV there’s an old saying, “as soon as the audience ‘hears’ the audio, we have a problem”. That is, if a sound does not fit, it detracts from the believability and therefore the quality of the whole production.
